Blonde is a short film that come from a short story that came from my brain. It is a thriller, a love story, a mystery, a comedy - it is about a young woman who is looking for a young man. She wants something. He may have it. He may not.
Maybe I should tell you how this even came about. In grad school, I was in a fantastic class taught by an incredible performance artist. She challenged me, dare I say, all of us, to branch out. To not think of ourselves in ONE art form, but in many. I painted. I wrote. The projects I did in that class were more terrifying than any role I have ever played or any project I have ever directed. One of my classmates created a “printed museum” for his thesis. It was beautiful, well done, well thought, impeccably curated. Truly engaging. He asked me to create work for it. For the second printed issue, the theme was “Blonde” and this story came to me, fully formed, almost the way Pallas Athena was born from the skull of Zeus fully formed. I cannot explain it. I sat down and wrote the entire short story in five minutes. I realized it was cinematic. I could make it into a movie if I chose. I sat on the idea, but after some prodding from the few people whom I had let read it (including a few well known directors in their own right) I decided to bite the bullet and do it.
